As more and more consumers turn to vape pens as their preferred way of consuming cannabis, CBD oil and CBD-based products are fast becoming the drug of choice for those who prefer the relaxed feeling it gives them compared to the high they get from cannabis. But apart from CBD vape juice there are other products like edibles, concentrates, tinctures and topical creams that provide alternative ways of consuming CBD. So what exactly are these products, and what are the benefits of consuming them compared to the more traditional rolled up joint?

CBD vs THC

Out of the 113 different cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, CBD and THC are the two most important compounds. Both CBD and THC are found in cannabis and hemp plants, where hemp has a higher concentration of CBD while marijuana contains more THC.

Compared to THC, CBD is a less psychoactive compound because it doesn’t bind to the cannabinoid receptors in our brain the way THC does. That’s why you don’t get high off CBD, and that’s what makes it a more appropriate substance to consume when you’re doing it purely for health reasons.

CBD Vape Oil Products

CBD vape oil products can be categorized either as CBD isolate or as full-spectrum CBD oil.

CBD vape oil in its pure form is extracted from either the marijuana or hemp plant and isolated from other cannabinoids to produce a CBD compound that’s almost pure. This is what is referred to as CBD isolate which contains more than 99% CBD, and doesn’t have any THC in it.

CBD isolate is then infused into different CBD products like vape juice, CBD oil tinctures, edibles, capsules and topical creams that we find in the market.

Full-Spectrum (or whole plant) CBD vape oil, on the other hand, includes other cannabinoids like CBN, CBG, THCV, to name a few, that occur naturally in the cannabis plant. It also contains trace amounts of THC that normally don’t exceed 0.3%, meaning it produces minimal psychoactive stimulation.

CBD to THC Ratios

The CBD to THC ratio can be altered further to create cannabis products that fit the user’s particular preference. The table below from Mashable best describes what the effects of these different ratios are.

CBD to THC Ratios

We carry CBD Shark Mint (1:1 CBD to THC) Vape Pens and CBD Watermellon (8:1 CBD to THC) Vape Pens.

Benefits of CBD

CBD is used to manage the following conditions:

  • pain and migraines
  • anxiety and depression
  • inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease
  • nausea

CBD offers a novel way of treating various forms of chronic pain. Using an animal model, a study published in the European Journal of Pain revealed that CBD, when applied on the skin, can help reduce pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. A different study showed that CBD prevents inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most problematic kinds of chronic pain to treat.

On the mental health front, CBD appeared to reduce nervousness and cognitive impairment in patients suffering from social anxiety. The study was conducted using a simulated public speaking task and the results were published in The International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology. Another study suggests that CBD can help patients suffering from insomnia to fall asleep and stay asleep.

The Different Ways of Taking CBD

CBD is available in the market in many forms including pills, powders, oils, gels, gummies, supplements, and extracts. It can be inhaled, ingested, or applied on the skin, although vaping is the most common way of taking CBD.

Inhalation

This is the fastest and most effective way to deliver for CBD into your system. Smoking or vaping CBD sends cannabinoids straight to your lungs enabling them to be rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and circulated in your entire body. CBD reaches maximum concentrations in plasma 3 minutes after you’ve consumed it.

Smoking burns CBD flower, while vaping uses CBD oil. Vaping enables you to inhale CBD more safely because it vaporizes CBD without combusting it which generates harmful byproducts like tar. Battery operated vaping pens are used to consume CBD which is stored in a cartridge that’s attached to the battery device.

Topical CBD Products

Topical creams, balms, salves, and oils are the other method by which CBD is administered. Applying CBD on the skin helps relieve pain, inflammation, and reduces stress, which is why CBD is popular with athletes.

CBD Tinctures

CBD tinctures are made using high CBD strains of hemp, mixed with alcohol and flavors. They’re are mainly used to help alleviate pain and reduce stress. Tinctures are taken by applying a drop of the liquid under the tongue, enabling fast absorption of CBD to take place in your bloodstream. They have the advantage of convenience and having a long shelf life.

CBD Edibles

CBD edibles are incorporated into food and beverage products like candy, chocolates, gummies, taffy, tonics, and sparkled water, to name a few.  Although it takes more time for the effects of CBD edibles to kick in (usually half an hour to two hours), the effects last longer compared to inhalation.  CBD Edibles are popular because they’re easy to make, discreet, and they don’t irritate your lungs. Other than pain and stress relief, they’re good for partying.
