Top 10 Vape Pen Issues and How to Fix Them

Vaping is an easy and safe way to consume your cannabis, that’s why more and more people are turning to this method as opposed to smoking it. However, there’s always that fly in the ointment that keeps you from having a great time when vaping.

Here’s a list of the top 10 problems you’re likely to run into when using a vape pen, and how to troubleshoot them.

Problem #1: My Push-button vape pen won’t turn on

Unlike disposable vape pens which come pre-charged and just require you to pull so as to turn on the battery, push button type vape pens can be trickier. You usually have to click the button five times to turn on the battery. When taking a hit, ensure you hold the button down, otherwise you won’t be able to draw.

Problem #2: My Vape Pen Won’t Charge or Draw

The most common reason for this is there isn’t proper contact between the battery and the cartridge, meaning your battery can’t fire the heating coil. This can be solved by adjusting the connection plate inside the thread to get better contact with the battery.  Simply use a sharp object like a paper clip to push up the connection plate inside the thread as shown in this video. The problem could also be due to residue building up on the heating coil in which case you may need to clean it. You can do this by dubbing it with a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol, and you’re good to go.

Problem #3: My Vape Pen Doesn’t Produce Any Vapour

Even with the battery fully charged, your vape pen may still fail to produce vapor. The most likely reason for this is that the firing pin doesn’t have proper contact with the battery, which can happen when the cartridge is screwed in too tight.

To avoid this, just ensure that the heating coil is pulled out to the point where it’s flush with the bottom of the cartridge, which you can do by using the tip of a pocket knife, a razor blade, or paper clip. Thereafter connect it to a charged battery to check if it’s “pulling” properly. Check out this video showing how to pull out the firing pin with the aid of a paper clip. Using this simple method your vape pen should be working A-Okay. A word of caution- please be careful not to cut yourself while doing this.

Problem #4: My Vape Pen Produces a Burnt Taste

If your vape pen produces an unpleasant burnt taste the reason could be either your vape pen’s temperature control is set too high, or the heating coil has residue on it. If your battery’s temperature is adjustable (a feature found in rechargeable vape pens), you can adjust it to a lower setting using its multi-click functions. Start by rapidly pressing button 5 times to turn it on, then press the button rapidly 3 times to alternate between low, medium and high temperatures. If it’s a problem with dirty heating coil, clean it with a cotton bud.

Problem #5: My Vape Pen Leaks

A leaking cartridge can be a real put off. This happens mainly due to:

  • Screwing in your battery charger too tightly to the cartridge. All components should be threaded together to get just the right amount of contact.
  • Leaving your vape pen in the car during hot weather can also cause the cartridge to leak. That’s because the cartridge seals expand and creating a passage for vape juice to leak out.
  • Drawing too frequently on your vape pen, known as chain vaping, can also weaken the cartridge seals, causing vape juice to leak out.

Problem #6: My Vape Cartridge Is Clogged

If you regularly vape on oils or concentrates, you’re likely to get clogs in your cartridge especially when the weather is cold. When clogs happen this interferes with airflow meaning you can’t draw any vapor. You can sort out this problem by

  1. Gently Blowing into the mouthpiece
  2. Heating the cartridge using a blow drier set at a low temperature, or rubbing the cartridge in between your hands.
  3. Dislodging whatever’s clogging the mouthpiece using a small using a safety pin, needle or toothpick.
  4. It also helps to regularly clean your cartridge.

Problem #7: My Cartridge has Air Bubbles

Your cartridge can develop air bubbles when you hit it. Normally that shouldn’t be a problem unless it’s preventing you from drawing. One way to remove air bubbles is heating the cartridge with a hair dryer set at a low temperature.

Problem #8: I Get A Sore Throat When I Vape

Any one of these things can cause a sore throat when you vape:

  • Drawing on an empty cartridge
  • Drawing too heavily

The first problem is pretty straight forward, and the solution is to always make sure your vape pen has enough juice in it to avoid that scratchy feeling in your throat. Alternatively, you can check the way you’re drawing and reduce the number of puffs you take in succession. Sipping on some water can also relieve these symptoms.

Problem #9: I’m Not Getting Enough Flavor

We’ve got lots of flavors in our shop available for your selection, so if you’re not satisfied, try changing the flavor! Seriously, though, if you think it’s your device that’s the problem you should check your cartridge to see if it’s working properly. Blowing on it could do the trick. Alternatively you could be having vaper’s tongue, in which case you should take lots of water or quit smoking.
